Castro Marim invests in better lives for cats and dogs

New cattery to open at official animal collection centre

The municipal council of Castro Marim is putting animal welfare at the heart of its agenda, with hundreds of sterilisations carried out, new shelters built, and a €300,000 upgrade to the region’s official animal centre already underway.

In the past two years alone, nearly 800 cats and dogs have been sterilised, a key step in controlling free-roaming colonies such as the one in Altura, where new cat houses have recently been installed. Alongside this, the municipality has spent around €90,000 on medication, surgeries, microchips, food, uniforms, protective gear, and hospital waste management.

Now, bigger improvements are on the way, the council says. The Intermunicipal Official Collection Centre at Soalheiras is set to gain a brand new cattery, modern support offices, expanded recovery areas, and a requalified kennel, all designed to give animals better conditions and care.

The council also paid tribute to staff, volunteers, the Jovens pelo Ambiente group, the association Guadi, and countless residents who have dedicated their time and energy to animal welfare.

On a closing note, the local authority urges families to consider giving a home to one of the many animals in need. As they put it: “Why not welcome a new four-legged friend into your life?”
