Gill Rhodes, local representative of the British charity Samaritan’s Purse, visited the International School of the Algarve last Friday to collect donations given by students as part of Operation Christmas Child.
The international campaign has been held annually since 1990 and is also known as ‘The Shoe Box Appeal’ because donations are given in decorated shoeboxes. Each shoebox is a Christmas present that will be handed to a child in selected poor communities in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
The school community has been participating with enthusiasm in Operation Christmas Child for over 10 years and again this year pupils showed great generosity.
The International School of the Algarve contributed this year with 180 boxes donated by students at their Porches establishment and 46 shoeboxes at their Espiche establishment (Barlavento International Primary School). “Many of the children receiving these boxes have never had a Christmas present”, stated Gill Rhodes.
