Churches can play an important part in attracting tourists interested in the religious patrimony of the country, according to the Diocese of the Algarve, which last Saturday launched an initiative entitled ‘How To Visit a Church’ at the Igreja do Carmo in Tavira. The idea, already in operation in Coimbra and Seia, is to encourage travel agents and publishers of tourist guides to promote sacred temples and churches, not just as buildings to learn and marvel at the historic objects and images inside, but to understand its context and origins.
