Copa do Guadiana brings over 4,000 young footballers to east Algarve

The youth football tournament will take place from June 21 to 30

The eastern Algarve town of Vila Real de Santo António will host the 11th edition of the Copa do Guadiana, one of the largest youth football tournaments held in Portugal, from June 21 to 30.

According to organisers, the event is expected to welcome more than 4,000 young athletes across 256 teams, competing in four football formats: 11-a-side, 9-a-side, 7-a-side, and 5-a-side.

The tournament is organised in three phases, with different age groups playing on separate dates:

  • June 21–24: Matches for players aged 14–15 and 12–13, in both 11-a-side and 9-a-side formats
  • June 24–27: Teams of players aged 10–11 take the field in 7-a-side matches
  • June 28–30: The youngest age groups, under-10s and under-8s, will play in 11-, 7-, and 5-a-side formats

Trophy presentations will take place after each phase, on June 24, 27, and 30. The official parades, a highlight of the tournament, are scheduled for the evenings of June 24 and 27 at 9pm at the Vila Real de Santo António Sports Complex.

To support the event, a dedicated ACG Bus service will operate between the various match venues, including the Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo sports complexes, and the Francisco Gomes Socorro Field.

Copa do Guadiana, named after the Guadiana River, is described as more than just a competition. It also aims to promotes friendship, teamwork, and fair play, bringing together players aged seven to 16. Since the first edition, the municipal council of Vila Real de Santo António has partnered in the event.
