Cost of essentials hits €258, highest since 2022

A year ago, the same items would have cost €19.79 less

The cost of buying essential food items in Portugal has reached a new high of €257.95, according to DECO PROteste, up €2.95 from the previous week.

This is the highest price recorded since the consumer association began tracking the 63-item basket in 2022. A year ago, the same items would have cost €19.79 less, while at the start of 2022 the difference was €70.25.

The basket includes a range of staples such as meat, fish, frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, and groceries. Items monitored include turkey, chicken, horse mackerel, hake, onions, potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples, oranges, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese, and butter.

Between April 1 and 8, spaghetti prices rose 24% to €1.18, spiral pasta increased 18% to €1.37, and tuna in vegetable oil jumped 16% to €1.65. Year-on-year, horse mackerel saw the largest increase at 55%, followed by cabbage at 49% and broccoli at 42%.
