Animals are part of the family, and they should never be abandoned
This month, Cadela Carlota was delighted to accept an invitation from Gil Eanes Secondary School (Lagos) to take part in their Open Day. It was a joyful opportunity to connect with the community – and especially the younger generation – through the presence of two of our shelter dogs, Princesa and Lana.
Both girls behaved beautifully and were a big hit with the students. Princesa, more relaxed and playful, made herself right at home, while Lana, although initially shy, quickly charmed everyone with her gentle nature. Through spending time with the dogs, students were reminded of a simple but vital truth: animals are part of the family, and they should never be abandoned.
Opportunities like this help us plant the seeds of compassion and responsibility in the hearts of future pet owners. We’re incredibly grateful to the school for welcoming us and to the students for their kindness and curiosity.
Meanwhile, back at the shelter, we continue to see the painful results of neglect. Cinnamon and Pepper – whose exact ages we may never know – are two more victims of abandonment, likely the result of uncontrolled breeding. Found alone and in terrible condition deep in the woods, these gentle souls are now safe, but their story is far too common.
Abandonment is often a consequence of failing to spay and neuter – a preventable mistake that feeds a cruel cycle. While many people claim to love animals, they fail to take the basic steps needed to protect them. We need to change this mindset: neutering is not a choice; it’s a responsibility.
Education is the only way forward. We believe in reaching people early, encouraging empathy, and giving them the tools to make informed, responsible decisions. Whether it’s through school visits or community outreach, we are committed to spreading awareness and breaking this cycle of suffering.
Thank you to everyone who supports us – through volunteering, donations, or simply sharing our message. Together, we can make a difference, one lesson – and one life – at a time.
