Galeria Nova at the Museu do Traje in São Brás de Alportel is hosting a “remarkable artistic encounter” from April 11 to May 18, 2026.
“The Space Between Us” (O Espaço Entre Nós) exhibition features German artist Markus Böhler and Swiss paper artist Gaby Studer, showcasing a dialogue of precision, materiality, and cultural identity.
Markus Böhler: 100 collages of a new homeland – Portugal
Markus Böhler, a Master of Fine Arts (California College of the Arts, Oakland) and long-time art lecturer, looks back on an impressive international career. His work has been exhibited in renowned institutions such as the Saarland Museum in Saarbrücken (Germany) and at the Southern Exposure as well as in galleries across San Francisco (US), Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria.
Before relocating to the Tavira area five years ago, he directed an art academy in Hamburg for 18 years.
In this current exhibition, the BBK member (Professional Artist) presents 100 analog collages and multi-coloured mono-transfer prints. His works represent a profound visual exploration of his adopted home, Portugal — a passion he also shares through workshops at his Casa PlanArte estate.
Gaby Studer: redefining the art of paper cutting
Gaby Studer, based in Pechão (Olhão) since late 2024, is one of today’s most distinguished paper artists. A highlight of her career is the prestigious “Prix Eugène Boudin” (Paris 2022). Furthermore, she was a finalist for the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice, one of the world’s most significant curated exhibitions at the Arsenale.
Her reputation is cemented by participations in CODA Paper Art (Netherlands) and the Murten Festival of Light 2025 (Switzerland).
She was featured in local magazine Entdecken Sie Algarve.
Dialogue and live insight
The title “The Space Between Us” describes not only the void and the spaces within the paper itself, but also the creative dialogue between two artists who have found their second home in the Sotavento Algarvio (East Algarve).
On selected days, the artists will be present in the gallery to personally demonstrate their techniques and engage in conversation with visitors.
The opening day on April 11 will start at 5pm.
