Portugal’s First Lady will be displaying her collection of nativity scenes at the Convento de Santo António in Loulé from December 1 to January 5.
Collecting nativity scenes has been a life-long passion of Maria Cavaco Silva and the exhibition will be an opportunity for the general public to admire more than 100 ‘presépios’ originating from various countries, such as the traditional scenes from Portugal’s Barcelos and Estremoz localities to examples from Timor, Israel, France and African and Eastern European countries.
The First Lady has built up her collection of nativity scenes over the years, purchasing various examples during her many official trips abroad as wife of the President of Portugal Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
Jointly organised by Loulé Câmara and the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, the exhibition will feature nativity scenes made out of clay, wood, tin, tiles and cork, which combine to create a diverse and interesting iconographic representation of Christmas.
Entry to the exhibition is free but donations for Existir, the Loulé-based association supporting handicapped people, are welcome.
The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
