German surfer dies on Aljezur beach

A German man died this afternoon while surfing at the Canal beach in Aljezur, authorities have confirmed.

According to Correio da Manhã, the man, said to be aged around 40, was surfing with a friend when he went missing for a few minutes. He was later spotted in the water by his friend, who brought him ashore.

Lagos port captain Hugo da Guia told Lusa news agency that his death was declared on the spot by a doctor from the National Medical Emergency Institute (INEM).

He added that the tragic incident occurred north of Canal beach and south of Arrifana beach.

Members of local maritime police, volunteer firefighters and INEM were all called to the scene, near where just last week a 20-year-old Romanian tourist went missing. Searches are still underway on a daily basis, though no trace of the young man has been found.
