Vale do Milho Golf & Clubhouse in Carvoeiro organised a series of events this month, all in aid of the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA).
In total, €1,000 was raised to help the AOA build a respite house (Casa Flor das Dunas) for patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment in Faro.
On November 2, Sarah Bruton offered her “Fifty Shades of Pink” nail painting from Innovation Health & Beauty Salon, donating all proceeds to the AOA.
Then on November 4, 32 supporters turned up for a 10am Texas Scramble, but with the event rained off, Captain Peter Hopwood organised an indoor putting session. With the weather still against attendees, golf had to be cancelled altogether on the day and rescheduled for November 6, when 42 supporters competed in favourable weather.
In the evening of November 4, 47 supporters arrived at the clubhouse for a dinner event, followed by a Beetle Drive. “Complete mayhem followed, cheating, name-calling but lots of fun. Fines were imposed at the end of the evening,” said organisers.
On November 6, 30 supporters showed their love of cakes and everything sweet, helping to raise more funds for the AOA.
In a letter from the AOA, Maria de Lurdes thanked the organisers for the “generous donation”. She said: “With your help and the help of others soon we will be able to start construction of Casa Flor das Dunas.
“Radiotherapy treatments take four to six weeks and travelling every day is very exhausting, especially for someone who suffers from cancer disease. Patients may come from any part of the country and most have to struggle not only for their health but with economic difficulties.
“That’s why it’s so important to gather all our efforts to build this hostel.”
