Portimão-born João José captained the Portuguese national volleyball team to victory over Sweden to secure a berth at next year’s European Championships in Austria and the Czech Republic.
This is only the fourth time following appearances in 1948, 1951 and 2005 that Portugal has reached the final phase of
the competition.
Closer to home, successful coach Aleksander Donner led the Lagos-based Gil Eanes club to the national ladies title.
