Iberian summit ends with condemnation of Iran (not mentioning U.S. or Israel)

Final declaration refers to  "Iran's indiscriminate and unjustified attacks”

The final declaration of the 36th Portuguese-Spanish Summit today condemned “Iran’s indiscriminate and unjustified attacks against the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and other countries in the region”, without reference to what started them (the Epic Fury attack by the United States and Israel).

In the declaration, released at the end of the meeting between the two countries and after the press conference given by Prime Ministers Luís Montenegro and Pedro Sánchez, the two countries begin by reiterating “their commitment to peace and stability in the region and reaffirming the need for full respect for international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.

“Both parties condemn Iran’s indiscriminate and unjustified attacks against the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and other countries in the region,” said the text.

At the same time, Portugal and Spain “insist on an immediate “de-escalation” and a return to dialogue and diplomacy, “the only way to achieve a lasting solution to all outstanding issues with Iran”.

“Portugal and Spain are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of their citizens in the region and to assist them in their return,” the document, in which there is no reference to the United States, also states.

Sánchez has condemned the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, and has refused to allow the Americans to use military bases on Spanish territory for these operations. In response, US President Donald Trump threatened Spain with reprisals (that are almost certain not to be followed through).

Luís Montenegro has stated that “Portugal did not accompany, endorse or participate in this military action”, but that America remains its ‘indispensable ally’.
