Intense night of firefighting reduces west Algarve wildfire

Flames still burning, but overall picture has improved

An intense night of firefighting in the hills behind Barão de São João has brought results.

The massive wildfire that began on Sunday in a little backwater of Alfambras, in the municipality of Aljezur, is reducing dramatically. The largest area is currently north-west of Bensafrim, albeit flare-ups throughout the perimeter are still occurring.

A source for civil protection has stressed that most of the flare-ups still have “high potential” to develop, thus risks continue.

Early this morning, the situation generally was much calmer, with one active front at the time said to be ‘moving south’.

The fear that the fire could somehow reach the Monchique foothills is still there, but this has not yet happened – and the good news here is that winds that have been blowing much too strong for firefighters to work with confidence are now subsiding.

Eight aircraft got back up into the air from 7.30am. There are now almost 700 firefighters on the ground, in various areas along the perimeter.

Barão’s cultural centre has opened as a form of café/ resting place for firefighters
