Last suspect in Manchester gang homicide arrested in Portugal

Portuguese young man arrested over 2020 killing linked to gang fight

Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has arrested the last suspect wanted in connection with a violent gang-related homicide in Manchester in November 2020.

The 23-year-old Portuguese man, detained in Lisbon by the PJ’s Criminal Information Unit, is accused by UK authorities of qualified homicide and serious bodily harm. He is believed to have been part of an organised gang involved in a violent confrontation with a rival group, arranged through social media. The clash reportedly involved multiple weapons, from knives and sabres to baseball bats, resulting in the death of one gang member.

The suspect is the final member of a five-person group. Two were arrested in Portugal in January, a third in the Netherlands, and the fourth on March 2.

After the incident, the suspect returned to Portugal. His arrest follows a legislative change in December 2025 allowing Portugal to extradite its citizens to the UK for criminal proceedings, with the guarantee that any custodial sentence would be served in Portugal, PJ police say in a statement.

The young man is set to appear before the Lisbon Court of Appeal.
