Added to 400-plus injured in storm, 545 injuries received by 3.30pm today

Leiria’s Santo André Hospital has treated no less than 545 people with trauma injuries due to accidents related to Storm Kristin – including over 150 in the cleaning and reconstruction work that is ongoing.

According to a hospital source, 110 people were admitted on Saturday (from injuries received in the ‘clear-up’), and by 3.30 pm today, another 42 people had arrived seeking treatment.

“The cumulative number of injured is 545,” said this source, which has been reporting data since the beginning of Storm Kristin.

The latest data from the hospital, relating to admissions up to 1pm on Saturday, indicated 424 injured.

On Saturday, the Local Health Unit appealed to the public, given the “significant increase in the number of people seeking care at the Accident and Emergency Department, particularly patients with trauma” to “adopt all safety measures during the ongoing cleaning and reconstruction work, preventing accidents and further injuries.”

Today, health authorities have once again urged citizens to use A&E only in situations of extreme necessity . as it is “fully focused on providing healthcare in emergency situations, in constant coordination with the Executive Board of the SNS (national health service) and Civil Protection.”

Leiria’s Local Health Unit (ULS) takes in the municipalities of Alcobaça, Batalha, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Nazaré, Ourém, Pombal and Porto de Mós. It includes three hospitals (Leiria, Pombal and Alcobaça) and 10 health centers.
