Lisbon better than NY

LISBON OFFERS a better environment to live and work than most other cities worldwide, according to a study by international consultants Mercer.

The Portuguese capital ranked in 44th place in a list of over 200 cities, with New York coming 49th.

Although Lisbon climbed three places on 2007, it was overtaken by 17 European cities, 12 of which are in the European Union.

Germany clocked up six cities in the top 20 while Canada and Australia, with five cities each, also boasted a better quality of life than Lisbon, while Zurich, Vienna and Geneva topped the world list.

Behind Lisbon came Rome, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Dubai and Miami.

At the other extreme of the ranking table came Baghdad (215th), along with the capitals of the central African republics, Congo (213th), Sudan (212th), and Chad (211th) while Minks in Byelorussia had the worst in Europe at 183rd.

The study looked at 39 different quality of life indicators including political stability, foreign relations, levels of crime, quality of banking and financial services, education, health, personal freedoms, press censorship, the weather, transport and public services, entertainment, food and energy bills, housing costs and taxes.

When it came to safety and security Lisbon was in 45th place behind 17 European cities. Luxemburg topped the list, followed by Helsinki, and three Swiss cities.

According to the study Moscow was the most dangerous city in Europe (189th) and Baghdad wasn’t far behind.
