A 63-year-old man has become the 11th fatality in the week of storms and heavy rain that have battered Portugal.
Rural tourism operator Nuno Paixão was driving along a section of road beside the Barragem de Amoreira that had become flooded just before 4pm yesterday, when a sudden surge of water swept up his car, leaving him trapped inside it and subsequently submerged.
In spite of the alert being called in almost immediately, reports explain that “it was only possible to remove the body from the car after 6pm”.
Recovery operations involved more than 30 firefighters/ divers/ police and Civil Protection personnel, backed by ‘more than 10 vehicles’.
Jornal de Notícias has identified the victim as 63-year-old Paixão, who ran the nearby Monte da Morena rural tourism retreat.
