Spring starts with heavy rain and thunderstorms across Portugal

Bad weather linked to Storm Therese affects mainland and Madeira

Spring begins today, but the new season is starting with heavy rain, thunderstorms and rough seas across much of Portugal.

According to Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) meteorologist Ângela Lourenço, the unstable weather is still being driven by the effects of Storm Therese.

“Spring begins with rain across most of the country, which may be more intense and at times heavy, accompanied by thunderstorms in Madeira and mainland Portugal,” she said.

The low-pressure system is currently located northwest of Madeira and is expected to move slowly southwards, continuing to affect both Madeira and the Algarve throughout this Friday and the weekend.

Winds will be stronger in Madeira, mainly from the east, with Friday expected to see the strongest gusts.

“Due to the low-pressure system, we will also see periods of rough seas with north-westerly waves, mainly along the north coast, on Madeira and the island of Porto Santo, but the situation will gradually improve. In the Algarve, we will have south-easterly waves of 2 to 2.5 metres. This situation is expected to come to an end overnight,” she said.

Weather warnings issued

As a result, IPMA has issued yellow warnings for Friday for Madeira and the Faro district due to heavy rain and rough seas.

Temperatures are expected to range from around 4–5°C at minimum to highs of about 20°C, with cooler conditions inland. Madeira has already seen a more noticeable drop in temperatures, especially in higher areas.

“In Madeira we’ve seen a more marked drop, but temperatures are expected to gradually return to normal seasonal levels; higher-altitude areas will remain cool,” she said.

Gradual improvement next week

Rain is expected to continue over the weekend, although some sunny spells may appear, especially in the north. Conditions are forecast to improve gradually from north to south, with the south likely to see the most unstable weather and possible thunderstorms.

“Sunday will see clear spells, but there is still a chance of showers further south,” she added.

Looking ahead, Ângela Lourenço said early next week should bring a break from the rain, with rising daytime temperatures but cooler nights.

“Maximum temperatures are expected to rise, and there may be conditions for a significant drop in temperature at night. However, it is possible that by the middle of next week there may be a change and some rainfall.”
