Manhunt underway after Hindustani grocer shot dead in front of wife and daughters

Eye-witnesses identify teenage assailants

A manhunt is underway for two teenage boys after a Hindustani shopkeeper was shot dead at his premises in Feijó, Almada (Lisbon outskirts) on Friday night.

Alam, aged 44 (no surname given) was shot three times in the chest after the youths tried to force their way into his mini-mercado at around 9.45pm.

According to some reports, the teenagers have been identified as aged 16 and 17. Other reports do not give their ages.

Correio da Manhã writes that the youths were dressed in black, wearing hoodies pulled up over their heads and armed.

They tried to force their way into the shop, and Alam “tried to resist them”.

The episode played out in front of Alam’s wife and two daughters, aged 10 and 14, says the paper – adding that the wife, who apparently does not speak Portuguese, is pregnant. In spite of not being fluent in the language, the wife alerted authorities, but by the time police arrived at the scene, the youths had fled, and there was nothing emergency paramedics could do to save the victim.

A friend identified as Robin has told SIC that three youths altogether were involved in the incident, and that they said when they arrived that they wanted to enter the shop, which Alam was in the process of closing. CM, however, refers to the incident as an attempted break-in.

CM concludes that all people its reporters spoke with “described concern over the increase in violence” that has been affecting the capital.
