The couple reported missing from their home in Verride, Montemor-o-Velho, close to the banks of the Mondego river, appears to have been found dead in their car this morning.
This far, reports are simply confirming that the car, a Citroen Saxo, has been discovered with two bodies inside it.
Ít seems highly unlikely that the bodies will be any others than those of Venâncio, 68 and his 65-year-old wife, Maria de Fátima, missing since last Tuesday.
Searches for the pair were mounted last Friday, and since that time authorities have been tireless in their efforts – using various teams with the help of drones.
The car was finally located in Soure early this morning. It will have been totally submerged at the time of the floods. The only reason it was discovered today (by locals) is that floodwaters are slowly receding, exposing what previously will have been covered.
These latest deaths bring the tally of fatalities as a result of storms that began battering the country from January 28 to 18.
