Monte Rei announces overhaul of flagship golf course

The North Course will close for a six-month renovation

One of the Algarve’s most prestigious golf courses is set to close for six months as part of what its owners describe as a significant renovation.

The Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in Castro Marim, widely regarded as one of Portugal’s top golf destinations, will shut its iconic North Course from April to September for a major upgrade aimed at improving playability, sustainability and long-term resilience.

The project is being led by Details – Hospitality, Sports & Leisure, the asset management platform of Arrow Global in Portugal, which oversees the resort’s operations.

The 18-hole North Course, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, will undergo a deep refurbishment following a detailed technical assessment. Planned works include extensive landscaping, the reconstruction of greens, bunker upgrades and the refurbishment of buggy paths.

A key focus of the intervention will be water efficiency. The resort will modernise its irrigation system and pumping station, aiming to reduce water consumption and improve performance.

Training facilities will also be upgraded, with improvements to the practice tee and the introduction of new training technology. Meanwhile, maintenance operations are set to become quieter and more sustainable, supported by modern equipment.

Nuno Sepúlveda, co-CEO of Details, says the goal is to add to what the golf course already excels in.

“Monte Rei is already one of the best golf courses in Portugal and Europe, and we respect that deeply,” he said. “This project is about protecting the character and playing quality that members and guests value, while making careful improvements that will allow the course to thrive in the coming decades.”

He added that the golf course would reopen stronger and better prepared for the future, “while remaining unmistakably Monte Rei”.

Located in the hills of the eastern Algarve, Monte Rei has built an international reputation as one of Portugal’s leading golf courses, particularly among golfers seeking premium and luxury experiences, it says. In addition to golf, the resort offers high-end dining, 24-hour concierge services, a heated pool, gym, tennis courts and family facilities, alongside luxury apartments and villas.

Details currently manages 23 hotels, 12 golf courses and a range of sports, leisure and dining assets across Portugal.
