New Civil Protection hub opens to community in Albufeira

“Pioneering” space aims to prepare residents and visitors for emergencies

A new Civil Protection space has opened in the heart of Albufeira, with local officials calling it a first-of-its-kind project in Portugal.

The ‘Espaço da Proteção Civil’ opened its doors on March 2 on Rua 5 de Outubro, as part of the municipal programme “Albufeira + Resiliente”. The initiative is designed to bring emergency prevention and safety advice closer to the public, helping residents and tourists better prepare for extreme weather and other unexpected events. Visitors can access leaflets and guidance materials, receive technical advice and take part in awareness sessions tailored to different age groups.

The opening of the centre comes nearly five months after a devastating tornado hit Albufeira, killing one and leaving dozens injured – the exact kind of disaster that the new hub aims to help prepare citizens for.

Mayor Rui Cristina described the project as groundbreaking.

“This is a pioneering concept in the country, dedicated to prevention, information and the transmission of knowledge, which should and will be used for the benefit of the entire community,” he said. He added that the space represents “an investment in the urban dynamics of the city and a commitment to the future,” stressing that “it is essential that the entire population is informed and prepared to act in case of bad weather.”

Luna Silva, president of the municipal assembly of Albufeira, also welcomed the initiative. “Making use of an existing space and equipping it with diverse functions to enable children and young people in the municipality to develop fundamental mechanisms to act and react in risk situations is, without a doubt, another excellent initiative by Civil Protection,” she said.

The opening session was attended by the GNR police, national maritime authority (AMN), the Albufeira volunteer firefighters and local civil protection services. Two school groups from the Albufeira Poente school group – one from the fourth grade of EB1 Nº1 de Albufeira and another from the 12th grade of Escola Secundária de Albufeira – also attended the opening event, visiting the facilities and taking part in the first awareness activities.
