New urban park opens in Parchal

The €2 million space aims to bring families together

A sprawling new urban park set to give families plenty of open space to walk, play and enjoy the outdoors will officially open this Saturday (March 21) in Parchal, Lagoa.

The ceremony will take place at 3pm at the park, built in the Passagem neighbourhood (Urbanização da Passagem) on a 33,000 sqm plot of land behind the former Arade Congress Centre – now renamed the Lagoa Congress Centre.

The inauguration will be led by Lagoa mayor Luís Encarnação.

Work on the Parchal Urban Park began as part of a €2 million investment to bring to life a project that residents have been dreaming of for many years, the council said when announcing the plans in 2024. From the start, the project was framed as a key step in improving public spaces in the municipality.

“It will be the first major urban park built in the municipality,” the council said at the time, adding that it “will be a family park” designed to bring different generations together.

The park includes a wide range of facilities, from a 1,500-metre cross-country track to green areas, rest zones and picnic spots. There is also a street workout area, an outdoor gym, playgrounds, and a snack bar with restrooms. It will also be available for local clubs to use for training.

One of the highlights promises to be a central lake covering 990sqm of the park.
