New year brings new motorway toll hikes

Tolls are increasing on the busy A1 and A2 motorways

Drivers travelling Portugal’s main north–south motorways will pay more starting tomorrow (January 1), with tolls rising by up to 50 cents on some of the country’s busiest routes.

According to a statement from motorway concession company Brisa, tolls on the A1 between Lisbon and Porto will increase by 45 cents, bringing the cost for Class 1 vehicles (which includes lightweight passenger vehicles) to €25.05. On the A2 between Lisbon and the Algarve, the increase will be 50 cents, raising the fare to €23.80.

The A2/A6 route between Marateca and Caia will also see a rise of 35 cents, taking the total to €15.40.

Brisa said toll prices will be updated by an average of 2.29% in 2026, in line with the inflation rate for mainland Portugal excluding housing, measured in October, plus an additional 0.1% adjustment provided for under national legislation.

The company stressed that the increases will not apply evenly across the network. Of the 93 toll rates charged to Class 1 vehicles, 40 will be updated, while 57% will remain unchanged compared to 2025. Routes such as Lisbon–Oeiras and Ermesinde–Valongo will see no increase.

Brisa also noted that some tolls are rising more sharply because they were not updated in previous years.

Looking ahead, the concessionaire plans to invest €64 million in 2026 in road maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, including resurfacing works, viaduct repairs and slope stabilisation across the network.

Several A2 service areas will see expanded parking for light vehicles, alongside a boost in electric vehicle charging capacity. Brisa and Via Verde have already opened a new EV supercharging hub at the Oeiras service area on the A5, with another planned for the A3 in Trofa in the first half of next year.
