OPEN HURT

Rui Machado exited tennis’ US Open clutching his left wrist and will not be able to compete again for three weeks. The 25-year-old Faro-born Portuguese champion injured himself during his 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 first round defeat by Austria’s Daniel Koellerer joining compatriots Frederico Gil and Michelle Brito on the sidelines.

Meanwhile Andy Murray was powering towards the quarter-finals alongside the equally impressive Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco while the decimated ladies draw appears to be once more at the mercy of Serena Williams
