Portugal’s PJ judicial police managed to track down a young German who fled to Lisbon from Cape Verde after allegedly knifing his family to death on Tuesday.
In a statement, the PJ said the 19-year-old was located in the Lisbon district “after intense and thorough international cooperation and information analysis”.
The arrest occurred within the context of an international arrest warrant issued by German authorities.
According to the PJ, the circumstances of the triple homicide are still under investigation, with close collaboration ongoing with German and Cape Verdean counterparts.
The arrested man “will be brought before the duty court within the legal timeframe for a decision”, says the statement.
The three German family members found dead inside a residence on the island of São Vicente, “with evidence suggesting homicide using a bladed weapon”, were the young man’s 60-year-old father, his 45-year-old stepmother and her 20-year-old daughter. The group had apparently arrived on the island for a Christmas holiday.
According to Cape Verdean Judicial Police, the suspect “has a history of psychological disturbances”. He is understood to have left Cape Verde very shortly after the slaughter ‘before the bodies were discovered’.
