Portimão announces police reinforcement following Praia da Rocha violence

26 PSP Intervention Corps officers are being deployed to Portimão

Portimão is getting a major police boost after a brutal gang assault in Praia da Rocha shocked the local community and prompted calls for action.

Mayor Álvaro Bila announced this Friday that 26 officers from Portugal’s PSP Intervention Corps will be deployed to the town starting June 4, an “essential reinforcement” which will beef up police presence in “several parts of the municipality, the mayor said.

Bila also confirmed that the local council will find accommodation for the arriving police officers.

The move comes just days after a shocking video surfaced showing a man being chased and viciously beaten by a group in Praia da Rocha – one of the Algarve’s most visited nightlife spots. The footage quickly was widely shared on social media, triggering outrage and a wave of concern from residents, tourists, and local businesses.

After announcing the police reinforcement, Bila repeated his earlier promise that “Portimão is not and will never be a place of impunity.”
