Portimão celebrates 20 years of Freedom Run

Event is inspired by Portugal's Carnation Revolution

One of the Algarve’s longest-running sporting events, Corrida da Liberdade (Freedom Run), will celebrate its 20th edition on April 25 in Portimão.

The event will bring together athletes, families and the wider community for a day of sport that marks the historic date of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution.

Divided into a 10km race, a 5km walk and a children’s run open to different age groups, the Freedom Run will take place along the city’s riverside area, where both the start and finish lines are located.

For the mayor of Portimão, Álvaro Bila, this year’s edition carries extra meaning.

“The Freedom Run is today one of the most emblematic sporting events in the municipality and a moment of connection between sport, community and the celebration of freedom,” Bila said in a statement.

“Over two decades, this event has brought together participants of all ages and reflects our commitment to promoting physical activity for all. After a record of 1,000 participants in 2025, we hope this anniversary edition can surpass that number,” he added, inviting everyone to take part.

Organised by Portimão municipal council, with technical support from HMS Sports, the event starts at 9am with the children’s races, designed for participants born between 2011 and 2021, with distances ranging from around 300 metres to 1,500 metres depending on age group.

The 10km race, open to participants aged 18 and over, and the 5km walk, open to all ages, both begin at 10am. All finishers will receive a participation medal.

Entries are now open online, with a promotional period running until April 1. Prices are set at €10 for the 10km race, €8 for the 5km walk and €3 for the children’s race. Participants can register individually or as part of a team, with all registrations including a race kit.

Kits must be collected on April 23 or April 24, as they will not be distributed on the day of the event. Collection requires proof of registration.
