Portugal’s outgoing President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, emphasised on Friday the deep and unique relationship between Portugal and Spain, calling for both countries to become “increasingly united” in order to better compete on the global stage.
Speaking in Madrid, where he was welcomed by King Felipe VI of Spain, Marcelo described Spain as “special” to Portugal. “Spain is Spain. It’s a unique case of affection, complicity, memories, and shared history,” he said. “We are family.”
Reflecting on his 10-year presidency, which will end on March 9, he noted that Spain had always held a central place in his agenda and heart. He remarked that Spain had been the destination for both his first and last official trips, citing over 15 visits to the country and more than 25 meetings with King Felipe VI worldwide.
Marcelo also pointed out that Portugal and Spain’s simultaneous accession to the European Union marked a significant shift towards closer ties. “In the past, we often competed. Today, and increasingly in the future, Portugal and Spain are united to scale up and compete better globally,” he said, stressing the importance of jointly defending international rules, human rights, and the UN Charter.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that Portugal’s next president, António José Seguro, would choose Spain as his first foreign visit, continuing to reinforce the bond between the two nations.
During a speech partly in Spanish, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa thanked King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia for their “warm hospitality” over the years and acknowledged Spain’s support during recent storms in Portugal, which included military resources and assistance with managing shared river dams.
The remarks came during a luncheon at the Royal Palace, attended by nearly 100 guests, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Rebelo de Sousa was received with military honours upon his arrival.
