Temperatures to exceed 35ºC in the south
Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) has launched a stark warning over rising temperatures starting Tuesday (May 27), which in turn will see rural fire risks increase exponentially – especially in the south.
According to IPMA, maximum temperatures will exceed 30ºC in most of the country, going even beyond 35ºC in the Algarve, Alentejo and Tagus Valley regions.
Nights will also gradually become warmer, with minimum temperatures set to rise above 15ºC in most of the country by the end of the week.
The warm and sunny weather will have consequences on rural fire risks, which are expected to jump dramatically, with parts of the country facing high to maximum danger levels, possibly leading to restrictions on outdoor activities in rural areas.
UV levels will also be “very high”, IPMA warns, advising citizens to avoid direct sun exposure.
The institute explains that the hot and dry weather is due to a mass of hot air coming from North Africa.
