Portugal crowned Europe’s U-17 champions

Another achievement for Portugal’s youth football teams

Portugal have won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship for the third time after a dominant 3-0 victory over France in Tirana, Albania on Sunday (June 1).

Anísio Cabral and Duarte Cunha gave Portugal’s male U-17 football team a 2-0 lead at halftime, with Gil Neves scoring the third at the 60-minute mark, dashing France’s title hopes.

Rafael Quintas, Portugal’s team captain, was named the Player of the Tournament.

The team’s strong performance was praised by Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) who travelled to Tirana to watch the game in-person.

“Portugal showed its strength and quality again, with a notable group of players supported by an exemplary coaching staff and structure,” said Proença. “They showed the world that the future of Portuguese football is secure. Talent is in our DNA,” he added.

Champions Portugal also won the old U-16 EURO four times; only Spain, on nine, have more combined titles that Portugal’s seven.
