Portugal launches new platform to fight election misinformation

As Portugal’s presidential election inches ever closer, the National Election Commission (CNE) has launched a new campaign and online platform aimed at helping voters spot, prevent and report misinformation during election periods.

“Launched at a time when the election campaign for the new President of the Republic is underway, the campaign comes in a context of increased disinformation during electoral events and the need to protect the integrity of the democratic process,” the CNE said in a statement.

The main objectives are to warn about the dangers of disinformation, strengthen media and digital literacy, help identify, filter, and separate information from disinformation, create and inform about simple reporting mechanisms, inform about correct procedures and credible sources, and minimise the impact of false content across various channels, the commission adds.

To this end, a microsite has been created, containing information on how to recognise the signs of electoral disinformation, and secure and confidential channels are also available for reporting electoral disinformation, including a digital form.

The site also features two practical guides designed to help users detect manipulative tactics and reduce the risk of being misled online.
