Portugal launched six satellites from the New Space Portugal Agenda into space today (Monday, March 30) aboard a SpaceX rocket.
Two of the satellites will reinforce the Atlantic Constellation and the remaining four will support the Lusíada Constellation, which aims to strengthen maritime navigation communications.
The Portuguese Air Force and CEiiA will reinforce the Atlantic Constellation with, respectively, a SAR satellite and a NexGen VHRLight optical satellite.
“The Portuguese Air Force satellite will equip the Atlantic Constellation, currently with three satellites already in orbit, with the capacity to observe the Earth in any weather conditions, day and night, ensuring continuous and reliable monitoring.
“This capability significantly strengthens constant surveillance, situational awareness and national security, allowing for a faster response to military missions, maritime security challenges and protection of the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” says a statement.
