Portugal’s fine-dining scene celebrated a major milestone on Tuesday night as 10 restaurants were awarded their first Michelin star during the Michelin Guide Portugal 2026 ceremony, held in Funchal, Madeira.
One of the evening’s biggest highlights was Fifty Seconds in Lisbon, led by chef Rui Silvestre, which earned its second Michelin star, joining the elite group of Portugal’s top restaurants. Silvestre has a long history in the Algarve, having previously won Michelin stars at Bon Bon (Carvoeiro) and Vistas (Vila Nova de Cacela).
Another standout moment came when Brazilian chef Angélica Salvador, from the restaurant Indiferente in Porto, received a Michelin star for her work, becoming only the third woman in Portugal to lead a Michelin-starred kitchen.
In total, Portugal now boasts 53 restaurants with Michelin stars. Meanwhile, the Algarve received seven Michelin stars, including the first ever for Faro’s Alameda restaurant, led by chef Rui Sequeira.
The ceremony took place at the Savoy Palace auditorium and gathered hundreds of chefs, restaurateurs, politicians, journalists and hospitality professionals from across the country. Actress Daniela Ruah hosted the event, while Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec delivered the opening remarks via video.
“Portugal holds a very special place in our history,” Poullennec said, praising the country for honouring its gastronomic heritage while continuing to innovate. He also highlighted the growing popularity of tasting menus and omakase dining experiences across the country.
Madeira regional president Miguel Albuquerque also welcomed guests, noting the island’s long-standing reputation as a tourism destination and praising the new generation of chefs helping reinvent Portuguese cuisine.
Tourism secretary of state Pedro Machado emphasised the importance of gastronomy for the country’s tourism sector, noting that Portugal welcomed 31 million international visitors in 2025.
