Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, spoke today with his counterparts from Oman and Jordan and condemned Iran’s attacks on their respective countries.
According to the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the social network X, Rangel was in contact with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, and during the conversation he thanked him for the attention given to displaced Portuguese citizens – expressing Portugal’s “total solidarity” in the face of Iran’s attacks that followed the large scale military operation mounted by the United States and Israel .
In a second statement, the same ministry said that Rangel also spoke with Omani Foreign Minister, Badr al-Busaidi, condemning “without reservation” the Iranian attacks on the country that has been mediating negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme with the United States.
Rangel “expressed Portugal’s solidarity and the hope that talks can resume soon,” the ministry added.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended that Portuguese citizens in the Middle East comply with recommendations from local authorities: stay at home, and contact embassies or consulates in case of emergency.
Since being attacked early yesterday morning, Iran has retaliated by launching missiles against Israel and countries in the region, with reports of attacks and casualties in Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Syria.
Some of the targets of Iranian missiles are US military bases in the Persian Gulf.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that attacks against Iran will intensify in the coming days.
US President Donald Trump stated that the operation aims to “eliminate imminent threats” from Iran, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the joint action against what he described as an “existential threat.”
Iran has confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader since 1989, and has declared a 40-day mourning period.
According to the Iranian Red Cross, at least 200 people have already died, and about 750 have been injured.
Portugal, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have all come out in condemnation of the Iranian attacks on neighbouring countries. They have equally condemned the trigger provided by the massive attacks by the United States and Israel.
