Portugal’s iconic EN2 route named ‘International Route of the Year’ in Spain

The EN2 is the only road in Europe that crosses a country in its entire length

The famous Estrada Nacional 2 (EN2), which stretches from Chaves in the north to Faro in the south and is often nicknamed Portugal’s Route 66, has been named ‘International Route of the Year’ at the prestigious 2025 Mototourism Awards (Premios Mototurismo) in Spain.

The accolade recognises a public or private entity based outside of Spain which has stood out for promoting motorcycle tourism and contributing significantly to the touristic development of a region or country. This year, Portugal took the spotlight thanks to the efforts of the National EN2 Municipalities Association (AMREN2) and other local stakeholders.

“The award represents an important mark for Portugal and strengthens the growing recognition of the EN2 Route as one of the most emblematic European routes for motorcyclist,” the association said in a statement.

“With 739,26 kilometres of road from the north to the south of the country, the EN2 offers a unique experience, combining heritage, stunning landscapes, local culture and hospitality which make it an unmissable experience in the international mototourism world,” it added.

AMREN2 also expects the new international award to attract more bikers eager to discover and explore the “heart of Portugal.”

The EN2 is the largest national road in Portugal and the only one in Europe that crosses a country in its entire length. In the Algarve, it crosses the municipalities of Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Faro.
