Portuguese judo fighter Jorge Fonseca has become the world champion in the under 100-kilo category after beating Russian rival Niyaz Ilyasov in the final of the competition, held today in Tokyo, Japan.
The 26-year-old has made history, becoming the first Portuguese judo fighter to win a gold medal at the World Judo Championships.
Jorge Fonseca, who competes for Sporting CP and was born in São Tomé e Príncipe, reached the final of the competition after eliminating Elmar Gasimov, an Olympic medalist, in the semi-final.
On Thursday, Portuguese judoka Bárbara Timo had already won a silver medal in the under 70-kilo category after losing to France’s Marie Eve Gahie in the final.
Speaking to Lusa news agency after the fight, Timo said that she “lacked a bit more attitude” to take home a gold medal.
Meantime, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has congratulated both athletes in a small statement on the official Presidency of the Republic website.
