Lisbon’s iconic Estádio da Luz, home to SL Benfica, is being touted as a leading contender to host the 2026 Finalissima, the high-profile football clash between European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina.
The match, scheduled for March 27, was initially set for Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, but ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have cast serious doubt over the original plan.
Spanish state radio RNE reports that UEFA and CONMEBOL organisers are actively considering Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz due to its convenience for players, many of whom are based in European clubs. Miami and London have also reportedly been pitched as potential host cities.
The Finalissima, a celebration of continental champions, pits the winners of the UEFA European Championship against Copa América victors. The tournament was held twice in 1985 and 1993 before returning in 2022. Argentina has won the trophy twice (2022 and 1993), while France won the first edition in 1985.
