PSP identifies around 30 people after shots fired with illegal weapons in Lisbon

PSP operation took place late last night

PSP police have identified around 30 people in an inspection operation in the Alfredo Bensaúde neighborhood, in Lisbon, where shots were allegedly fired with prohibited firearms on New Year’s Eve, a police source has confirmed today.

The source said that “the more intensive inspection and patrolling operation” took place between 10am last night and 2am this morning, and involved Rapid Intervention Teams and resources from the Traffic Division of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command.

According to the same source, no incidents were reported during the operation, nor were any arrests made.

The operation comes after a video was posted on social media showing four men firing shots into the air in the Alfredo Bensaúde neighborhood, in the parish of Olivais, allegedly on New Year’s Eve. The men were clearly using automatic and semi-automatic weapons, possession of which is prohibited to people who do not belong to the police force.

Yesterday, a police source said that the PSP was “analysing, evaluating and investigating” the video, so that the men firing the shots can be identified “as quickly as possible”.

Authorities have no record of any complaints or reports related to gunfire in that area on New Year’s Eve – but they became aware of the video circulating on social media and thus began to investigate.

Today, a police source states that the investigation remains ongoing at the Criminal Investigation Division of the Lisbon PSP (Public Security Police).

The sources also assures that “the PSP will continue to carry out other actions in various areas of the Lisbon metropolitan area, to prevent crime and detect individuals suspected of committing various crimes.”
