PSP police investigate New Year’s Eve shots by four men with military grade weapons

Men filmed ‘shooting in air’ in Bairro Alfredo Bensaúde, Olivais

PSP police are investigating a new incident where armed men appear seemingly out of nowhere to let off military grade weapons in a densely-populated neighbourhood in Olivais, Lisbon.

The latest incident allegedly coincided with New Year’s Eve.

It is even possible that some people mistook the noise for fireworks. But the video leaves no room for doubts: this definitely happened; the question is ‘what was it about?’ Was it the ‘show of strength’ that SIC Notícias seems to believe it to have been? Was it ‘gypsies’ that CHEGA leader André Ventura seems to think it was – complaining that a judge has ordered him to remove his presidential election billboards saying ‘gypsies must comply with the law’ when this video shows that some clearly do not…

What does seem to have been established is that none of these men are residents of the ‘bairro’: they arrived, let off their weapons – and then left.

The background to this story is that PSP police apprehended several weapons from this same neighbourhood around 10 days ago – and “exactly a year ago, another shooting occurred in the neighbourhood which was also filmed and uploaded onto social networks”, writes SIC.

“Over the last few years, similar situations have played out in various parts of the country, all with shots fired in the public highway, filmed and shared online – either by local residents or by the authors of the shots themselves”, the outlet concludes.

As to the reasons for this behaviour, no one seems to have a clear answer.
