No matter what the improvements of border controls at Lisbon Airport, January 29 looks like being a ‘bad day’ for passengers to pick for any journeys: ASPP/ PSP – the police professionals union association – has scheduled a protest rally for the day, accusing the government of ‘failing to comply’ with an agreement forged in 2024 for career advancement.
ASPP/PSP has been threatening ‘further actions’ for some time. In November, the union structure abandoned negotiations with the government, alleging that the executive was not meeting the targets of the July 2024 agreement. It warned then that it would be carrying out actions in several commands, in February.
The leadership of this largest union for the PSP (Public Security Police) also decided to organise a police rally during a Council of Ministers meeting and for PSP officers to remain in the galleries of the Assembly of the Republic during a bi-weekly debate.
In a statement released yesterday, the association said there has been a “lack of seriousness” on the part of the government in failing to comply with the agreement reached in 2024 – adding that after protests held at the end of last year, near the Prime Minister’s official residence, there was “a total absence of responses”.
The association accuses the government of adopting a policy of wage devaluation, as well as blocking early retirements, cutting time off, and, above all, disrespecting the 2024 agreement.
ASPP/PSP’s leadership remains available to meet with the government “provided that it keeps its word and presents a concrete proposal on what was agreed.”
If the executive “does not change its course of action, (ASPP/PSP) will proceed with demonstrations at nationally significant events, protests outside the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), and the organisation of a nationwide police demonstration.“
