ANA’s profits reached a record €551 million
Portugal’s airports authority ANA ended 2024 with a record-breaking profit of €511 million, up 22.5% from the previous year, powered by a surge in air traffic and new routes that pushed passenger numbers to all-time highs.
The airport operator attributed the boom to the opening of 35 new routes, which helped increase total passenger traffic to 69.2 million, a 4% increase on 2023 and 17% above pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
As part of its concession agreement with the Portuguese State, ANA returned €15 million to public coffers in 2024 through a revenue-sharing mechanism.
The company also ramped up investment, spending over €100 million in infrastructure improvements, notably at the airports in the Azores (+125%), Porto (+64%) and Faro (62%).
Among ANA’s major ongoing projects is a €250 million investment in the expansion of Lisbon Airport’s Terminal 1, including a new South Pier and upgrades to the Central Pier. Meanwhile, €53 million is earmarked for runway renovation in Porto, with €6.2 million already spent.
Other major projects include the rehabilitation of the terminals in Ponta Delgada and Horta (Azores), representing €17 million. In the Algarve, around €4.4 million has already been used in 2024 to refurbish Faro Airport’s terminal roof, part of a larger €17 million plan.
In Madeira, work has begun on a new terminal in Porto Santo (€40 million projected), while Lisbon’s Terminal 2 is also getting a makeover, with €12 million budgeted and €4.7 million spent last year.
“These results reflect disciplined management and a sustainable business model that delivers value for the State,” said ANA CEO Thierry Ligonnière.
ANA operates under a 50-year concession granted in 2012 by the Portuguese government. It is fully owned by VINCI Airports, a French infrastructure giant managing over 70 airports across 13 countries.
