Staff and students at Vale Verde International School, Lagos, grew or wore moustaches in November as part of their campaign to raise awareness of male forms of cancer.
Approximately one in four men will suffer some form of cancer in their lifetime. Often men, according to the World Cancer Research Foundation, are reluctant to seek help when initial signs of cancer show.
In support of the Australia-originated cancer charity Movember, Vale Verde staff and students participated in activities to raise funds for Movember-recognised cancer research projects.
During the final week of their Movember activities, students had the chance to paint their teachers’ moustaches a variety of colours. Staff then sported their colourful upper-lips while students also wore false moustaches and many decided to design their own. In return for these fun events, parents were asked to pledge money for the Movember cause.
Vale Verde International School Principal Edward Cooper said: “Students and staff have enjoyed themselves with these activities, which all have the very important focus of the terrible range of diseases we call cancers. There isn’t yet a Movember campaign in Portugal so all of our participants have been asked to donate directly to the Movember website, www.movember.com”
