The São Brás de Alportel Municipal Council and Parish Council have approved the establishment of a protocol with the Portuguese League Against Cancer, paving the way for the creation of a local branch of the organisation in the municipality.
This will bring the association’s work closer to the population, by promoting awareness activities and supporting patients and families affected by this disease.
The cooperation protocol, which was unanimously approved at the Council Meeting on January 7, provides for the provision of a space for the League branch, where, in addition to supporting patients, family members and carers, activities will also be developed to raise awareness of cancer and mobilise the population to raise funds.
Says the local council: “The Portuguese League Against Cancer (Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro) already has its Southern Regional Centre operating in the Algarve (Faro) and does commendable work in providing services to the community, in particular to cancer patients, their families and carers, which includes emotional, psychological, social, technical, therapeutic and legal support, depending on the resources available, as well as primary and secondary prevention of cancer.”
The São Brás de Alportel branch will work in close collaboration with the Faro Support Group of the Portuguese League Against Cancer.
Volunteers are needed to carry out this work. Those interested in getting involved, should contact the following entities:
