Segunda Liga slimmed down

At the end of this season, five teams will be relegated from the Segunda Liga and three promoted from the regional championships, thus reducing the league to 22 teams. At the end of next season, four teams will be relegated and two promoted from the reformed Zone North and Zone South so as to reduce the league to 20.

In 2017/18 season, the two bottom clubs will go down, with the regional champions being promoted. It is proposed that the teams finishing 17th and 18th in the Segunda Liga would play-off against the runners-up of the regional leagues but this needs to be ratified by the Portuguese FA.

Currently pushing for promotion are SC Portimonense, just three points adrift, whilst at the other end of the table SC Farense are two points above the drop zone. The third Algarve team in the Segunda Liga is SC Olhanense nestling in 10th place.
