Reflecting on her East African roots, celebrated singer and song-writer Manuela Lopes launches a new series of musical compositions that combine the traditional sounds and poetry of Mozambique.
In concert with five accomplished musicians, she presents ‘Projecto Mãe-Água’ at the Jazz Club of São Brás Museum on Sunday, November 18, from 5pm.
Recently praised for her ‘Billie Holiday Tribute Concert’, Manuela’s new musical renditions are more personal, recreating the atmosphere of the country where she was born.
Giving ‘voice’ to her cultural background, she explains: “The lyrics are based on the words of my favourite Mozambican poet. Linking them to the musical ambience and rhythms of Mozambique, each song tells a story and all the songs are connected like a string of beads.”
The concert consists of original compositions – filtered through a free approach to pop, Jazz and Latin styles – arranged in collaboration with Paul Mitchell-Davidson (guitar).
Other members of ‘Projecto Mãe – Água’ are James Mellor (piano), Matt Lester (flute and saxophone), Luis Henrique (electric bass) and Amadis Monteiro (percussion). Tickets cost €10 (Amigos €8). Carolyn Kain
