Suspected people-trafficker, wanted in Hungary, arrested in ‘Lisbon area’

53-year-old faces up to 20 years behind bars

A ‘foreign citizen’ sought by authorities in Hungary – and suspected of links to a people-trafficking mafia – has been arrested by PJ police “in the Lisbon area”.

According to a short statement by the PJ today, the man is suspected of belonging to a criminal network that facilitated the entry of ‘illegal people’ into Austria via the Hungarian frontier “in exchange for elevated quantities of money”.

At issue are “crimes of aiding illegal immigration that occurred in 2020”, says the statement – suggesting that the man potentially faces up to 20 years behind bars.

For now the suspect is being presented to Lisbon’s Court of Appeal where bail/ custody measures will be decided ahead of the extradition process.
