Swimming has been temporarily banned on several urban beaches in Albufeira following a water contamination alert linked to a ruptured wastewater pipe. The decision, announced by the municipal council, aims to “ensure the safety of all beachgoers” while repairs and water quality checks are carried out.
The alert comes after regional water company Águas do Algarve confirmed a break in a ductile iron pipe (DN300) on the wastewater pumping system at Vale Faro, detected on Sunday, October 5. Repair work began immediately, the council says, and flow stabilisation was confirmed early Monday afternoon.
As a precaution, red flags were raised on the Praia dos Pescadores, Peneco, Inatel, and Alemães beaches, following tests that detected contamination in the water.
Local authorities are working closely with Águas do Algarve and other competent entities to monitor conditions and restore normality as quickly and safely as possible, the municipal council added.
