Take it or leave it …

Ensure the happy future of your pets

Visiting the Animal Rescue Algarve’s (ARA) rescue centre outside of Loulé were Jenny Clarke, president of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), Anita Wight, Ambassador of Legacy Pet Plan, and pet owners to discuss the Pet Plan, an initiative developed by ARA’s Sid Richardson, CIC.

“We have a wonderful video of ‘Cabanita’, ARA’s rescue home. It only gives a flavour of what to expect,” Anita grins. “You have to see the place to see the work that has gone into Cabanita and the spirit of the people that drive it.”

Tricia and David, APAA members, have a little rescue dog from Tiny Shelter, while Jane Russell has cats in Monchique and will be signing up to the Pet Plan. Jane was so taken with the work that APAA is doing she will become a member too, and Christine wanted a second visit.

“Although Jane could not take a dog, she decided to sponsor one,” Sid explains. “For €7.50 a month, you can sponsor a dog of your choice. ARA keeps you updated on its wellbeing and what’s happening generally at the centre.”

Everyone agrees that they feel they are getting VIP treatment. “Richly deserved!” says Sid. “After showing immense interest in travelling to see us, and become more involved in their pets’ futures.”

Legacy is an original Battersea Dogs Home idea of which there are many spin-offs in England. ARA makes changes to suit individual needs. Anita has been busy talking to prospective planners.

“It is a take-it-or-leave-it decision we all have to make: ensuring the happy future of our beautiful, much-valued pets if we are unable to take care of them, or leave our mortal coil; or not, which could be a disaster for the pet.”
