A talk on the Restoration of 1640 by Algarve historian Peter Booker is being held on Saturday December 1 at 7pm in Pessoa’s Café, Tavira.
December 1 has been a public holiday in Portugal for some years. Why and what does it commemorate?
After 60 years of rule by the King of Spain, the Portuguese became anxious to take their government into their own hands again. On December 1 in Lisbon, the Spanish vicereine was dispossessed and her Portuguese factotum was defenestrated.
Later on December 15, the conspirators acclaimed the Duke of Bragança as D João IV. Should we continue to remember these events?
Peter Booker celebrates the reassertion of Portuguese national identity.
The event will be held at Pessoa’s Café on the left bank of the River Gilão in Tavira.
Café owners Peter Dost and Paula Ferreira will have on sale a variety of tapas using local produce and Portuguese wines.
There is no charge for the event but organisers the Algarve History Association will be asking for voluntary monetary contributions to donate to the Tavira Cine Clube and the Al Masrah Theatre Company.
